New Leader Training What Makes a Trained Unit Leader To become a trained leader you must be registered with the Boy Scouts of America and meet the requirements for your position. Below is a list of trainings with brief descriptions that you may need to become a trained leader. If you would like to see what is required for your position, click here NEW LEADER TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEADERS Youth Protection Youth Protection Training is offered online through the Boy Scouts of America National Website. Their training site is interactive and you can go at your own pace. The minimum amount of time to take the training is approximately 30 - 40 minutes. This training can be completed in a classroom setting or online. To take the training in a classroom, you would need to contact your District Executive. Cub Scout Leader Training is also available online. (Take Training Online Now!) Boy Scout Leader Training is divided into Scoutmaster / Assistant Scoutmaster (SM / ASM) Training and Troop Committee Training The SM / ASM Training is only available through a classroom setting. Each district does their training schedule different. Most of them do the training over a few different weekends. Contact your local district executive to find out when the next available training is. Troop Committee Training is for Troop Committee Members. This session may be included in conjunction with the SM / ASM Training. The training is also available online (Take Training Online Now!) Introduction to Outdoor Skills (IOLS) is an overnight camp-out training and is part of SM / ASM training. This training is also available to you through your District Executive. Venturing and Exploring Basic Leader Training is designed to introduce Crew and Post adullt leaders to the basic information needed to operate a challangeing and quality program. For more information on Venturing and Exploring programs, go to your district's web page to find out when the next Venturing Basic Training is available. You can also check the neighboring district's schedule if your district's dates are inconvenient. Sea Scouts Adult Leader Basic Training is an important early step in training Sea Scout Leaders in the skills and attributes necessary to be an effective leader in the Ship's service delivery to youth. It is intended primarily to enhance individual knowledge of and connectivity with the BSA strategic plan, program, and resources, as well as emphasizing personal skills necessary for youth development in the Sea Scout program.
