What is N.Y.L.T.? National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with Leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
N.Y.L.T. is a six-day course completed over two weekends. The concepts center on what a leader must be, what a leader must know, and what a leader must do. The key elements are taught with a focus on how to apply them in everday situations.
N.Y.L.T. is a fun experience that will energize young leaders. The setting for this course is John W. Nichols Scout Ranch on the southwest side of Oklahoma City.
Who should attend? The course is designed for youth members of the Boy Scouts of America.
Requirements for Boy Scout Participants:
Be at least 13 years of age, but not yet 18.
Be First Class Rank or higher.
Complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (or Troop Leadership Training).
Hold a troop leadership position.
Obtain Scoutmaster approval.
Obtain parent approval.
Requirements for Venturers/Sea Scouts:
Be a member of a Crew or Ship.
Complete Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC).
Obtain Advisor or Skipper approval.
Obtain parent approval.
The N.Y.L.T.Staff: The course is directed by youth leaders with adult guidance. All youth leaders are past participants in an N.Y.L.T. course and many have also attended Kodiak training, National Advanced Youth Leader Experience, or camp staff. The adult leaders are Wood Badge trained and have extensive experience in leading Scouting programs.
The Benefits of the Course: Youth leaders will learn practical leadership skills they can remember and immediately apply in everyday life. N.Y.L.T. uses concepts that are connected to rank advancement in Scouting and award achievement in Venturing. The course is recognized throughout the Boy Scouts of America as the nationally-prescribed training course for youth leadersand is a prerequisite for several programs including the National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience at Philmont, Jamboree troop leadership, and future N.Y.L.T. staff participation.
Fall 2012 Course: The N.Y.L.T. course at John Nichols Scout Ranch is divided into two weekend sessions. The first session begins on the morning of Thursday, October 18 and goes until the late afternoon of Sunday, October 21. The second weekend begins on the morning of Saturday, October 27 and ends the next afternoon. Attendance is required for the entire duration of both weekends.
Please check fall break schedules, as it may be necessary to request an excused school absence for this leadership course. The course director will supply a letter to your principal if requested.
Course fee is $200 if paid in full by September 18, 2012. The fee after September 18, 2012 is $225.
Participants must provide a current BSA Annual Health and Medical Record (Parts A, B, and C) to the Course Director by October 1.
